About PU Law College:
The Department of Laws, originally established at Lahore in 1889, was re-established at Shimla in 1948, shifted to Jalandhar in 1950 and finally re-located at the University Campus at Chandigarh in 1959. Its Alumni include Judges of the Supreme Court and High Courts, Union Cabinet Ministers, State Chief Ministers, Cabinet Ministers, Ambassadors, Senior Bureaucrats, Police officers and other legal luminaries. Justice imparting system is the foundation of every civilized nation. Law department formerly known as University Law College is committed to play an important role in the legal system of this university. Stature of this department is as big as its strength. Law graduates from this department are serving all over the country in the lower courts, High Courts and Supreme Court.
The Department is the pride alma mater of three Chief Justices of India, a large number of Chief Justices of the High Courts, members of subordinate judiciary, civil servants, law officers and members of the legal profession and a large number of legal luminaries and justices. The number of its alumni, which rose to the bench of the Supreme Court and in many High Courts of this country, is too large to mention. Chief Justice of India Dr. A.S. Anand, the former Chief Justice of India taught in this department for a number of years.

Eligibility | The Entrance test for Bachelor of Laws (LL.B.) based on PUCET (PG) shall be open to all such candidates who possess the qualifications as mentioned below:- Bachelors/Masters Degree in any discipline with at least 45%* marks in aggregate from Panjab University or any other University recognized by Bar Council of India and Panjab University. In case of a candidate having a Bachelors degree of this University or any other University recognized by the Syndicate, through Modern Indian Languages (Hindi or Urdu or Punjabi (Gurmukhi Script) and/or in a Classical Language (Sanskrit or Persian or Arabic) the aggregate of 45% marks shall be calculated by taking into account the percentage of aggregate marks that he had secured at the language examination, excluding the marks for additional optional paper, English and the elective subject taken together. *5% concession is admissible in eligibility marks to SC/ST/BC/PwD candidates. |

A hostel is a home away from home. Aware of the special needs and requirements of students, who come from far- ung places to this centre of learning, the Panjab University tries to provide them safe, secure and a ordable accommodation.
There are seventeen Residence Halls for students on the campus, 8 each for boys and 9 for girls and a Working Women Hostel. These Halls, which accommodate more than 6000 students, are named after eminent men and women, historical personalities and personages: Mehar Chand Mahajan, G.C. Chatterji, Shanti Swaroop Bhatnagar, Vallabh Bhai Patel, Lala Lajpat Rai, Justice Teja Singh
Samundari, Swami Vivekananda, Baba Banda Singh Bahadur, Mata Gujri, Laxmi Bai, Sarojini Naidu, Kasturba Gandhi, Savitri Bai Phule, Mother Teresa, Bebe Nanaki, Florence Nightingale and Amrita Pritam who played an important role in shaping the destiny of world and left footprints on the sands of time.
The University Hostels take pains to give its students a neat and clean environment and a comfortable place to live in. There are Wardens/Hostel Sta on duty round the clock. Each hostel has a dining hall and canteen, several desert and water coolers, a visitors’ lounge, and invariably an outdoor court for badminton, volleyball etc. The mess provides a balanced diet at reasonable rates. The Common Room is fairly well equipped with current magazines and newspapers. There is provision for indoor games, LCD TV and music system. Internet connectivity through wi- and cyber caféas been provided in each hostel.
Architecturally, the hostels are aesthetically laid out with plenty of open space and a lot of greenery. The rooms are comfortable, tted with fans, lights and hard furniture. Each wing of the hostel has several verandahs and balconies.
Comforts are important but they are not enough. Man is a social animal and needs to interact with others. The resident students are encouraged to participate in cultural and social activities. Colourful evenings of song and dance are not unusual on the campus. Talent shows, dramatics and literary events are organized from time to time. The inmates of a hostel are encouraged to live in harmony, like one big family, lending each other a helping hand whenever required, mutually cooperating to make hostel life a rich and fruitful experience.
There is no doubt that during these formative years in the hostel, life-long bonds are created and friendships cemented. This is a time, which will stand out in the memory as a golden period. University experience is an important milestone in an individual’s life, the stepping-stone to an adult life of responsibility and care. The hostels of Panjab University try to provide an ideal atmosphere for a healthy, all round development of personality and a launching pad for a glorious career ahead.
Living in a hostel presupposes a high degree of integrity, consciousness, cooperation, tolerance and hard work for a bright future and good image of our institution.

The Department provides practical training to LL.B. students. One full paper of the 6th Semester includes compulsory participation in two Moots along with the court visits. Special lectures by eminent Academicians, Judges and Senior Advocates which are compulsory as a part of curriculum, are delivered for the bene t of LL.B. and LL.M students. From the academic session 2017-18 onwards, students being admitted in LL.B. courses have to undergo an internship annually. The students of the department are sent to the Supreme Court of India/Parliament as a part of the practical training programme. The department has a separate and well furnished Moot
Court Hall where every year various Seminars, Presentations and Moot Court Competition take place. As a part of Extra- Curriculur activities, every year the department conducts a Blood Donation Camp to encourage the students to donate blood and save Life.
Legal Aid Clinic-cum-Arbitration Centre as well as a Placement Cell are also functioning in the department. The Department has provision for special lectures in memory of Justice Mehr Chand Mahajan and S. Ajit Singh Sarhadi. These lectures have been delivered over the years by eminent persons such as Justice V.K. Krishna Iyer, Justice V.S. Deshpande, Professor Upinder Bakshi, Dr.
L.M. Singhvi, Professor Mool Chand Sharma, Justice J.S. Verma, Mr. Soli J. Sorabjee and Prof. M.R. Madhava Menon. The department has a good library with more than 56,000 documents and 52 regularly subscribed Indian and foreign journals. The Department also has the distinction of having the Depository Library for United Nations Documents which is the only library with more than 8000 documents North of India. The Department regularly publishes a Law Journal (Panjab University Law Review).
