Scholarship/Financial Aid Guide for National Law Universities
Getting into a National Law University is hard. Staying in one without financial stress should not be. Yet a large number of NLU students — including students at the country’s most prestigious law schools — graduate without ever having applied for a single scholarship, simply because they did not know these opportunities existed or assumed they would not qualify.
This article is a complete guide to every major scholarship available to students at NLUs — institutions that admit via CLAT and are part of the Consortium of National Law Universities. It covers three broad categories: internal university aid, external private scholarships, and government-backed schemes specifically available to NLU students. Whether you are a first-generation student trying to manage a ₹10 lakh fee structure, or a general category student with a strong CLAT rank, there is very likely something here for you.
Broadly, scholarships at NLUs fall into three categories:
(i) University Aid – administered and funded by the University
(ii) External Aid – administered by the University but funded by external bodies
(iii) Third Party Aid – facilitated by the University but administered and funded by third parties
Within these three broad heads, scholarships are further classified based on eligibility criteria and the method of selection. These include
- Merit-based scholarships: Given to students with strong academic performance or achievements.
- Merit-cum-means scholarships: Awarded to students who perform well academically and also come from financially weaker backgrounds.
- Category-based government scholarships: Provided by the government to students belonging to specific social categories as per official norms.
- Domicile-based fee concessions: Fee reductions given to students who are residents of a particular state or region.
- Private and donor-funded scholarships: Financial support offered by private organisations, companies, or individual donors.
1. National Law School of India University (NLSIU), Bangalore:
NLSIU has a well-defined financial aid framework aimed at ensuring that students from diverse socio-economic backgrounds can pursue legal education without financial barriers.
NLSIU integrates its financial aid process with the PM Vidyalaxmi Scheme, which offers the following benefits:
- Collateral-free and guarantor-free education loans
- No income ceiling for eligibility
- Loans up to ₹30 lakhs
- Partial or full interest subvention for students from lower-income families
Important Note: Applicants must apply through the official PM Vidyalaxmi Portal before applying for University financial aid. A copy of the loan application is mandatory and is a pre-condition for consideration under NLSIU’s financial aid process.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Gross family income must be less than ₹8,00,000 per annum
- Family income is calculated as the average gross family income of the last three financial years, or the gross family income of the latest financial year — whichever is higher
- Family includes all members residing together: the student, parents, siblings, and spouse/partner (if applicable)
Application Process:
- During the admission procedure, the University releases a notification inviting applications for financial aid and detailing the procedure
- Students are required to fill out the application form within the deadline and submit the required documents
Documents Required:
- Income Tax Returns (ITR) — all pages of the ITR Form — for the last three financial years of the applicant/parents/spouse/guardians (all earning family members)
- Salary statements for the last 3 months of all earning family members
- Bank account statements for the last 1 year of all earning family members
- Details of the family’s financial assets (movable and immovable property, investments, etc.)
- Business owners/professionals: ITR (all pages), bank statements, audited financial statements, and GST returns for the last three years
- Details including documentary support of main expenses (e.g., medical expenses, fee receipts for the last year of study)
- Loan statements for the last 12 months are mandatory if a loan expense is declared
1. Kotak Kanya Scholarship
The Kotak Kanya Scholarship programme was launched in 2021 by the Kotak Education Foundation and provides financial assistance to meritorious girl students from financially challenged backgrounds to complete their higher education. Scholarships under this scheme are granted to deserving young women from across India, enabling them to continue their educational journey and pursue their ambitions without the burden of financial constraints. Key features of the programme include:
- Mentorship support
- Finishing school training
- Life skills support for holistic development

2. Reliance Foundation Scholarships
Reliance Foundation Scholarships support talented undergraduate and postgraduate students across India in pursuing higher education. Launched in 2022, the initiative aims to award 50,000 scholarships over 10 years, empowering youth to contribute to the nation’s growth.

3. ARRA Scholarship by Rosy Blue Foundation
The ARRA Scholarship, launched by the Rosy Blue Foundation in collaboration with NLSIU, is a fully funded, merit-based initiative designed to empower exceptional students in the BA LLB (Hons.) programme. Established in memory of Shri Ramniklalbhai Mehta and Shri Arunkumar Mehta, the scholarship reflects Rosy Blue’s enduring commitment to excellence, integrity, and leadership.
Key Features:
- Top 20 students admitted to NLSIU based on their CLAT rank are considered each year
- Covers educational, living, and maintenance expenses
- Family income must be below ₹35 lakhs per annum

4. Foundation for Excellence (FFE) Scholarship
The Foundation for Excellence (FFE) is a public charitable trust established in 1994 to support academically talented yet financially underprivileged students in India. It offers Merit-and-Means scholarships for professional degree programmes in Law (LLB).
Eligibility:
- Annual family income cap: ₹3,00,000

5. ICCR Scholarship
The Indian Council for Cultural Relations (ICCR), Ministry of External Affairs, Government of India, provides scholarships to foreign national students through its own selection process.
- ICCR communicates the names of selected candidates to the University
- Selected candidates must submit their report in the prescribed format along with the University’s fee structure
- Scholarship amount is equivalent to that of Indian nationals and covers entire fees including hostel charges
- Continues until completion of the programme, subject to terms and conditions
- Students must not be detained in any year of the programme

1. Karnataka Social Welfare Department — One-Time Financial Assistance for SC/ST Students
The Department of Social Welfare, Government of Karnataka, has recognised NLSIU as one of the nationally prestigious educational institutions eligible for the Post-Matric One-Time Financial Assistance Scheme. 3. National Divyangjan Finance and Development Corporation (NDFDC) Scheme
The NDFDC, under the Department of Empowerment of Persons with Disabilities (Divyangjan), Ministry of Social Justice and Empowerment, Government of India, offers concessional education loans to students with disabilities pursuing higher education and professional training courses in India and abroad.
Key Benefits:
- Loan assistance up to ₹50 lakhs for educational and training courses
- Nominal interest rate of 4% per annum
- Available through leading banks including Punjab National Bank, IDBI Bank, Union Bank of India, Bank of Baroda, J&K Bank Ltd., and 17 Regional Rural Banks

2. National Academy of Legal Studies and Research (NALSAR), Hyderabad:
NALSAR University of Law, Hyderabad provides primarily means-based financial support to help students from economically weaker backgrounds access quality legal education.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Annual income of parents must not exceed ₹8,00,000
- For BA LLB (Hons.), the student must have secured 45% aggregate marks or more in the 10+2 examination or equivalent (40% for applicants belonging to SC/ST communities)
Application Process:
- Scholarship application forms are made available in the first week of July, or one week after the completion of admissions
- Applications can be submitted both offline and online
- Applicants are given 3 weeks to submit their applications
- The University Scholarship Committee will make scholarship disbursal decisions within four weeks of the application deadline
Documents Required:
- Marks statements of the qualifying examination (10+2 or equivalent for BA LLB Hons. first-year students)
- Particulars and supporting documents of any financial aid, grant, or scholarship received from any institution, government scheme, or other source; or a declaration stating that no such aid has been received

Telangana Scholarship Portal The Telangana government provides financial aid to students. Candidates are requested to regularly check the portal for notifications regarding applications and subsequent procedures.

3. West Bengal National University of Juridical Sciences (NUJS), Kolkata
NUJS offers a Merit-cum-Means scholarship to support deserving students from low-income families and promote equal access to legal education.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Applicable to all students of the UG Programme, except NRI/NRI-sponsored category candidates and foreign nationals
- Parental income must be less than or equal to ₹6,00,000 per annum
- Students already receiving any other scholarship or grant are still eligible to apply
Application Process:
- The Assistant Registrar of Academics publishes a scholarship notification including the scholarship form and proforma for declarations by students and their parents/guardians
- Each scholarship is provided for one academic year; students must re-apply every year with relevant documents
- Applications must be submitted within two weeks of the notification

1. MMXC Equal Opportunities Scholarship
This scholarship was started by NUJS alumni who believe in giving back to the University and reducing financial burdens on students so that they can graduate with a well-rounded experience. Scholarships are broadly granted on the basis of the following factors:
- Merit: Academic potential and excellence
- Need: Income, scholarship, loan debt, and family contribution
- Diversity: Socio-economic status, first-generation college graduate, underrepresented minorities, etc.
Students are encouraged to apply even if they meet only some of the above criteria.
Key Details:
- 3 scholarships of ₹1,00,000 each are awarded per academic year
- Applicable only to the 5-year integrated BA LLB course
- Students from any year (first to fifth) may apply

The application must include:
- A cover letter/statement of purpose (no more than one page) making a case for the award based on the scholarship criteria, overall academic performance, and demonstrated economic need. Students receiving any scholarship or financial assistance must declare the amount in the cover letter
- A brief article (no more than 500 words) analysing a concept relating to any field of law
- A CV of no more than 2 pages
- A letter from NUJS certifying enrolment in the BA LLB programme
- Photocopies of marksheets/CGPA scores for all previous academic years/semesters, attested by NUJS
- Photocopy of Class 12 board exam marksheet and CLAT rank (for first-year applicants only)
- Any other document that strengthens the case for the scholarship
Shortlisted applicants will be required to participate in a short interview. Additional documents may be requested.
2. Reema Ray Memorial Scholarship
The Reema Ray Memorial Scholarship honours Reema Ray, a 2006 graduate of the LLB (Hons.) Programme at WBNUJS. Reema was an associate at Touchstone Partners from 2008 until her untimely demise in 2013. During her time at the firm, she made enormous contributions and deeply touched the hearts and minds of her colleagues. This scholarship was established to honour her memory and to support and encourage students to embody the values she stood for.

- Only one scholarship is awarded per academic year
Application Process:
The application must include:
- A cover letter of no more than one page outlining the applicant’s academic and overall performance
- A CV of no more than one page
- A brief piece (no more than 700 words) analysing a recent news article or concept relating to a field of law
- A letter from NUJS certifying enrolment in the LLB programme
- Photocopy of marksheet/CGPA
Applicants may be required to submit additional documents as requested by Touchstone Partners and may be asked to participate in a telephone interview. Please note that the selection of the successful candidate is solely at the discretion of Touchstone Partners.

4. National Law Institute University (NLIU), Bhopal
NLIU Bhopal offers two Merit-cum-Means scholarships — one in the name of Late Justice J.S. Verma and the other in the name of the University.
Key Details:
- Both scholarships cover a full tuition fee waiver for the entire duration of the course
- Only two scholarships are provided by the University at any given time
Eligibility Criteria:
- In the first year, scholarships are awarded to students securing the highest marks in CLAT
- From the second year to the fifth year, scholarships are awarded to students securing the highest marks (without repeat) in NLIU examinations of the 1st, 2nd, 3rd, and 4th years respectively
- Annual income of the student’s parents must not exceed the amount prescribed by the University from time to time

Mukhyamantri Medhavi Vidyarthi Yojana — Madhya Pradesh Scholarship Portal
The Madhya Pradesh Government provides financial assistance to domicile students of Madhya Pradesh seeking admission to 25 National Law Universities and private universities.

5. Gujarat National Law University (GNLU), Gandhinagar
GNLU facilitates a diverse financial support ecosystem that combines standard government welfare schemes with a strong emphasis on incentivising academic and professional excellence.
While access is supported through external frameworks like the National Scholarship Portal, the Central Sector Scholarship for SC students, and the Hon’ble Chief Minister Scholarship Scheme, the University’s internal funding is uniquely structured around opportunity-based aid rather than passive tuition waivers alone. The institution actively funds student development through:
- Scholarships for participation in national and international events
- Research assistance via tuition waivers
- Support for international internships

6. National Law University, Jodhpur (NLUJ)
NLU Jodhpur provides a Merit-cum-Means scholarship to offer financial assistance to two meritorious UG students of each batch.
Key Details:
- The scholarship is awarded at the end of each academic year
- The scholarship is awarded in the form of a refund of tuition fees (only) already paid by the student
Eligibility Criteria:
- The student must be enrolled as an undergraduate student of the University
- The student must not have taken admission under the NRI/NRI-sponsored category
- Total gross annual income of parents/guardian/family must be below ₹8,00,000, or as per EWS criteria notified by the Government of India from time to time. Family includes all members residing together: the student, parents, siblings, and spouse/partner. In the case of the death of a family member, the necessary records must be produced
- Cumulative CGPA across all previous semesters must be no less than 6.0
- Marks obtained after improvement examinations will not be considered for CGPA calculation
Application Process:
- Students must apply to the University in the prescribed format within 30 days of the declaration of results of the 2nd, 4th, 6th, 8th, or 10th Semester
Documents Required:
- Aadhaar details of all family members as defined above
- Income Tax Returns for the last three years of all family members
- For salaried professionals: salary statements for the last three months of all family members
- For business professionals: GST returns for the last three years (if applicable)
- For agriculturists: government-approved valid proof of valuation of land and income
- Self-attested bank statement of the applicant for the last one year
- Affidavit by the applicant declaring the financial assets of the family, including movable, immovable, and investments
- Affidavit by the applicant affirming the veracity of all information stated
- A declaration disclosing the total annual income of the family/guardian of the applicant

1. Education Loan — State Bank of India
Students unable to meet tuition fee requirements may apply directly to the SBI branch located within the University campus. Under the SBI Scholar Loan Scheme, students may avail a loan of up to ₹20 lakhs without providing any collateral.

2. Financial Assistance by NLU Jodhpur Alumni Association
The NLU Jodhpur Alumni Association (NLUJAA) is a collective effort by NLUJ alumni to give back to the University and its students, one avenue of which is financial aid.
- Students are required to fill out a form on the NLUJAA website detailing their information and need for the scholarship

7. Rammanohar Lohiya National Law University (RMNLU), Lucknow
RMNLU provides a Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to financially support its students.
Key Details:
- Open to students of BA LLB (Hons.)
- 10 scholarships in total are provided across the undergraduate degree (first to fifth year), with two from each year
- Scholarship holders must re-apply every year for continuation
- Scholarship amount: ₹50,000 per annum per student
Eligibility Criteria:
- First-year students: must have the highest inter se merit in CLAT and Class 12 with an A+ grade or equivalent marks
- Second to fifth-year students: must have the highest inter se merit in the concerned semester with a CPI/CPG of not less than 8.5

8. Hidayatullah National Law University (HNLU), Raipur
HNLU offers a Vice Chancellor’s Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to provide financial assistance to students.
Key Details:
- A maximum of 24 students are supported at any time (six students per semester)
- Available from Semester 3 onwards of the BA LLB (Hons.) programme
- Scholarship amount: up to 50% of the tuition fee charged in that particular semester (subject to revision)
- Students availing any full external scholarship under any other scheme are not eligible
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must have an overall GPA of at least 5.00 in the previous semester
- Annual family income must not exceed ₹8,00,000
- Must have BCI-mandated attendance in the preceding semester
- Must not have been indicted for any category of indiscipline as per the University Code of Conduct
Documents Required:
- Latest income certificate issued by a competent authority not below the rank of Tehsildar, as proof of family income
9. Maharashtra National Law University (MNLU), Nagpur
MNLU Nagpur provides the Shri Ram Jethmalani Merit-cum-Need Scholarship, which offers tuition support to students from the second year onwards.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must have at least 75% attendance in previous semesters
- Must be a currently enrolled student of the University
- Must have no disciplinary action or enquiry on record
- Must have no backlogs or failures in any course
- Must not be subject to any bar by order of the University in the previous academic year
- For merit-based consideration: CGPA of at least 6.0 in the previous year
- For need-based consideration: parental income must not exceed ₹8,00,000 per annum
Application Process:
- Students must apply using the prescribed format, which is usually released in July each year, and attach the required documents
Documents Required:
- For need-based category: Income Tax Returns of parent(s) for the previous financial year, or an income certificate issued by the Revenue Department of the concerned State Government
10. National University of Advanced Legal Studies (NUALS), Kochi
The University may institute Scholarships, Fellowships, and Freeships for students who obtain the highest rank or marks in their class in University examinations, subject to the following conditions:
- Institutions or individuals may donate a sum of not less than ₹1,00,000 to the University for the purpose of instituting such awards
- The interest derived from such donations will be used to award Scholarships, Fellowships, or Freeships to deserving students, as determined by the Faculty Committee each year
- The primary criterion for all such awards is merit coupled with means
- The decision of the Faculty Committee, as approved by the Vice-Chancellor, shall be final
11. National Law University, Odisha (NLUO)
NLUO offers a Merit-cum-Means Scholarship to support students in need of financial assistance.
Key Details:
- Annual scholarship amount: ₹1,00,000
- The amount is adjusted against tuition fees and other charges
- A maximum of two scholarship awardees per batch at any given time
- Only one scholarship will be awarded per family at any given time
Eligibility Criteria:
- Total family income from all sources must not exceed ₹5,00,000 per annum
- Students must have secured an aggregate of not less than 60% (or equivalent) in their Higher Secondary/Pre-University or other qualifying examinations
- Existing students must have maintained a GPA of at least 5.0 in the previous two semesters
Documents Required:
- Employed parents/guardians: salary certificate or letter from employer
- Self-employed, unemployed, or other parents/guardians: affidavit on non-judicial stamp paper
- In both cases, documents must be supported by copies of relevant records such as IT returns, landholding documents, etc.
12. National University of Study and Research in Law (NUSRL), Ranchi
NUSRL provides two types of scholarships:
- Merit Scholarship
Provides financial assistance to meritorious UG students from the second to final year, and PG students in the first year, based on CGPA.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be an enrolled undergraduate or postgraduate student of the University
- Cumulative CGPA of all previous semesters must not be less than 6.0
- For UG: awarded based on the higher CGPA secured in the previous year
- For PG: awarded based on the higher CGPA of the previous semester
- Students already availing any other scholarship or financial aid of ₹50,000 or more are not eligible (educational loans do not disqualify)
- Support Scholarship
Provides financial assistance to UG students from the second to final year and PG first-year students belonging to SC, ST, OBC, and General categories, based on low-income criteria.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Must be an enrolled undergraduate or postgraduate student of the University
- Annual family income must be below ₹2,40,000
- Among eligible applicants, preference is given to those with the lowest family income
- Students already availing any other scholarship or financial aid of ₹50,000 or more are not eligible (educational loans do not disqualify)
- Must submit an Income Certificate (duly verified by CSC), Caste Certificate (duly verified by CSC), and an affidavit stating that no other scholarship is being received from any other source
Scholarship Amount (Both Types): ₹50,000 per year, awarded as a waiver of tuition fees.
Documents Required:
- Income Certificate (duly verified by CSC) disclosing the total annual income of the family/guardian of the applicant
13. National Law University and Judicial Academy (NLUJA), Assam
NLUJA offers a Merit-cum-Means Scholarship, available from the second to fifth year of the BA LLB (Hons.) Five Year Integrated Course, subject to the fulfilment of eligibility criteria. The scholarship is available to students whose family income is less than ₹8,00,000 per annum. It is divided into three categories:
Category I — Merit-cum-Means Scholarship for Boys 30% of the total annual scholarship fund is allocated to this category.
Eligibility:
- Minimum CGPA of 7.5
- No backlog papers
- Minimum attendance of 75%
- Conduct Certificate in the prescribed format
- Duly certified family income certificate indicating income below ₹8,00,000, issued by a competent state/central government authority
Category II — Merit-cum-Means Scholarship for Girls 40% of the total annual scholarship fund is allocated to this category.
Eligibility:
- Minimum CGPA of 7.0
- No backlog papers
- Minimum attendance of 75%
- Conduct Certificate in the prescribed format
- Duly certified family income certificate indicating income below ₹8,00,000, issued by a competent state/central government authority
Category III — Merit-cum-Means Scholarship for Students Affected by Natural Disaster/Accident/Financial Hardship 30% of the total annual scholarship fund is allocated to this category.
Eligibility:
- Minimum CGPA of 6.5
- Not more than one backlog paper
- Minimum attendance of 75% (may be exempted on genuine grounds)
- Conduct Certificate in the prescribed format
- Duly certified family income certificate indicating income below ₹8,00,000, issued by a competent state/central government authority
- Duly endorsed certificate from a state/central government authority describing the nature of the natural disaster, accident, or financial hardship and the quantum of loss suffered
14. Himachal Pradesh National Law University (HPNLU), Shimla
HPNLU has a dedicated Student Scholarship Cell to support students in accessing financial assistance and government scholarship schemes.
- The Scholarship Cell conducts an orientation programme for all first-semester students at the beginning of every academic year, introducing them to available scholarships and the registration procedure
- The University ensures that various scholarship schemes introduced by the Central and State Governments are communicated to students in a timely manner
Eligibility Criteria:
- Income of parent/guardian must not exceed ₹6,00,000 per annum (or as may be revised from time to time)
- The continuation of scholarships is governed by the rules and regulations of the University in force at the relevant time
Application Process:
- Students are required to apply through the prescribed University form as notified on the University website
15. Tamil Nadu National Law University (TNNLU)
TNNLU provides financial assistance to students in need through the TNNLU Financial Assistance Scheme.
Key Details:
- The Executive Council of TNNLU shall, if necessary, determine the maximum number of students who may be granted financial assistance and the maximum amount of assistance per academic year, having regard to the financial situation of the University
- Within the overall limits set by the University, the Selection Committee decides on the quantum of financial assistance to be given to each student, based on the financial ability of their family
Eligibility Criteria:
- Selection is based solely on the financial ability of the student’s family
- In the case of undergraduate students, repeated poor academic performance due to wilful neglect may result in ineligibility for the subsequent academic year, provided such a decision is taken by the designated committee after giving the student a fair hearing. Students may be re-eligible upon demonstrating commitment to academic activity in the subsequent year
- Proven involvement in grave indiscipline, failure to secure the minimum mandated attendance for non-justifiable reasons, or misrepresentation of facts for securing the assistance may render the student ineligible in subsequent years

A natural leader, Oyishee has served as a Student Council member and House Captain. Her passion for debate saw her compete in numerous inter-school debates and speech competitions, where she also helped organise and conduct events. She further contributed to her school magazine as part of the editorial team, playing an active role in curating and compiling content for her school community.
Her standout achievement is her role as Editor-in-Chief of the International Press Corps at Ashok Hall IntraMUN 2024, where she led a team of student journalists through press reportage, editorial decision-making, and committee coverage. She also participated in moot court, receiving a Special Mention from the judges for her legal reasoning and arguments.
