B.A.LL.B. (Faculty of Law)
NUALS offers a Five Year B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Programme. From the 2009 Admissions, the course is offered under the Choice Based Credit & Semester System. The Five Year Programme is divided into Ten Semesters i.e., there are two semesters in each academic year. As part of its B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Programme The University offers courses on frontier areas of law such as Maritime Law, Media & Telecommunications Law, Forensic Science, Psychological Medicine & Law. The teaching pedagogy is non-conventional with a combination of various methods of law teaching – lectures, discussions, case studies, moot courts, and project work. The lectures periodically delivered by eminent judges, distinguished jurists, and reputed visiting fellows provide opportunities for more academic and intellectual discourses. There is a continuous internal assessment of student performance. To develop analytical skills and critical faculties and to keep the students abreast with the changes in law and social mores, seminars and debates on recent cases and legal developments are held regularly.
ELIGIBILITY FOR ADMISSION
Admission to the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree courses shall be based on the performance in the Common Law Admission Test (CLAT).
a) The candidate for CLAT shall have passed the Higher Secondary Certificate examination (10+2) or an examination recognized as equivalent thereto with at least 45 % marks.
b) Exemption up to 5% from the requirement of the minimum of 45% for the qualifying examination is given to the candidates belonging to Scheduled Caste/Scheduled Tribe (SC/ST) [declared eligible for reservation in the State of Kerala] and up to 3% to the candidates belonging to Socially and Educationally Backward Classes [declared eligible for reservation in the State of Kerala]. These categories are allowed to apply for CLAT if they obtain not less than 40 % and 42 % of marks, respectively, in the qualifying examination.
c) Students who are appearing for the qualifying examination are allowed to appear for CLAT. However, they should submit the results of the qualifying examination at the time of admission. If they do not do so, the candidates shall be considered ineligible.
The number of seats:
The intake for the B. A. LL. B. (Hons.) The degree Course shall be 120. The seats shall be apportioned as follows:
Scheduled Caste (Kerala) – 8% (10 seats)
Scheduled Tribe (Kerala) – 2% (2 seats)
Socially and Educationally Backward Classes (SEBC) (Kerala) – 30% (36 seats)
State merit – 9% (11 seats)
Out of the above, 5% of the total intake of 120 seats are horizontally reserved for Specially Abled Persons (SAP)
In addition to 120 seats, 12 seats are reserved for Economically Weaker Sections among the General Category of Kerala, 2 seats are reserved for Transgenders (Kerala) and 2 seats for Jammu and Kashmir migrants as Supernumerary Quota admitted through CLAT. In addition to the above supernumerary seats reserved for admission through CLAT, 12 seats are reserved as Supernumerary Quota for NRI-sponsored candidates and 4 seats for Foreign Nationals who are admitted directly by the University. The candidates in these categories need not appear for CLAT and they can directly apply to the University in the prescribed format provided on the website. If any seat remains vacant in the NRI-sponsored quota the same shall be filled from the CLAT 2023 rank list. If any seat remains vacant in the Foreign Nationals quota, the same shall be filled from the NRI-sponsored quota and in that case, the fees applicable for NRI-sponsored candidates shall be levied. In case NRI-sponsored candidates are not available, other CLAT 2023 ranked candidates shall be considered and in that case, the usual fees shall be levied.
Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes and Socially and Educationally Backward Classes mean communities as identified and listed as such for admission to professional courses, by the Government of Kerala. List of communities classified by the Government of Kerala as Scheduled Castes, Scheduled Tribes, Other Eligible Communities, and Backward and Other Backward Classes are given in Annexures I, II, III & IV respectively. The procedure for claiming admission against seats reserved for SC/ST is given in Annexure I A, for Other Eligible Communities in Annexure III A, for Backward and Other Backward Classes in Annexure IV A, and State Merit in Annexure V.
SC/ST candidates shall have to produce Community Certificates issued by the competent authorities in the State of Kerala. Candidates seeking admission against the seats reserved for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes shall, in addition to the Community Certificate, produce a Non-Creamy Layer Certificate issued by the competent authority in Kerala.
Seats reserved for the Scheduled Castes and Scheduled Tribes shall be inter-changeable. In case sufficient candidates are not available for seats reserved for Socially and Educationally Backward Classes, such seats shall be filled up under the State merit quota. The seats unveiled by the SC/ST candidates will be filled by Other Eligible Communities (OEC) candidates and in case of seats remaining vacant under the Specially Abled Persons (SAP) Quota, such seats shall be filled up under State Merit Quota. Candidates seeking admission against seats reserved for State Merit Quota shall produce a ‘Nativity Certificate’ as prescribed by the Government of Kerala for admission to professional courses in the State.

The campus of the University is situated at Kinfra Hi-tech Park, H.M.T. Colony. The campus has two separate hostel blocks for girls and boys. The hostel consists of triple occupancy rooms with an attached bathroom. The inmates are given a separate cot, table, and cupboard. Each hostel has a common room and a mess hall. There are provisions for indoor gaming facilities like caroms, chess, and badminton.

Auditorium
The place where cultural and recreational activities and celebrations take place. NUALS Auditorium can accommodate 300 persons at a time and is a venue for annual Academic Convocations.
Legal Aid Clinic
The Constitutional of India provides to ensure that every person is assured of quality legal aid and is not at a disadvantage due to a lack of resources.
Health Club and Gymnasium
Well-equipped gymnasiums for both boys and girls are available on campus. The Gymnasium is splendid with modern and sophisticated equipment.
Sports Infrastructure
NUALS envisages the all-round development of a student, and Sports & Athletics are essential for any student’s development. An ever-active football ground can be found when you enter the NUALS campus every evening. The football ground has been leveled recently and is in match-ready condition. Inter-semester football competitions as well as the NPL (NUALS Premier League) which is a premium football match held between teams constituting of students from all batches.
Music Room
A Modern music room is set up in the amenities block. Students can exercise their musical talent, or break into a random tune.
University Canteen
Quality food with hygiene and safety for the students, staff, and outsiders is made available within the university campus itself.
The NUALS Campus is situated at Kalamassery, Kochi, the industrial capital of Kerala, and the seat of the Kerala High Court. At present, the Campus consists of an Academic Block which includes the Moot Court Hall, an Amenities Centre, Faculty Apartments, Hostels for boys and girls, a computer lab, a well- equipped Library with all online journals, an Administrative Block, an Auditorium and a state-of-the-art Seminar Hall. The Administrative Block and the Library Block were constructed with the assistance of the UGC and the State Government. . An Internship Committee and a Placement Committee, under the supervision of a Faculty Member, function in the University. The NUALS Campus Recruitment Committee facilitates placements for students graduating from NUALS. A substantial number of them have already benefitted from this program in the past ten years. Endowments have been instituted for students who excel in the B.A. LL.B. (Hons.) Degree Examination. Financial assistance is being provided to the students for participating in Moot Court Competitions and Paper Presentations. The winners of the International Moot Court Competitions are being awarded cash prizes too. The University has implemented the following programs for the benefit of the students’ Skill Based Learning and Gamification: A new pedagogic strategy, Skill Based Learning with Semester based outcome was introduced in NUALS in the academic year 2020-21. For the implementation of this program, software, and computer applications were developed. Various legal studies exercises, in the form of Gamification, have been introduced in consultation with the School of Management Studies, Cochin University of Science and Technology Mentoring Programme: NUALS believes that mentoring is an important aspect of the campus-based education which helps the students to build confidence, develop resilience and competencies based on the industrial needs. Finishing School: The Finishing School aims to enhance and polish the skill set required for the students to meet the particular needs of the specialized career options available for a law graduate.
Library
The NUALS Law Library is an excellent source of material on any matter of law. Apart from 13,420 law books, the students can also access online legal resources such as Manupatra, HeinOnline, J Stor, Westlaw, Lexis Nexis, SCC Online, etc. The library also has an online catalog which makes lending of books an easy process.
Academic Block
The Academic Block of NUALS is the hub of education in NUALS and where the classrooms, as well as the offices of the faculty, are situated. The classrooms are large and spacious and the speaker systems make lectures well audible to the students. There are seven classrooms in total (one each for Third, Fourth, and Fifth-year students, and two each for First and Second-year students).
Moot Court Hall
The Moot Court Hall is located in the Academic Block. The Hall is large, spacious, and well-furnished with a surround-sound speaker system, witness stands, etc. The Mooting culture in NUALS is deep-seated. Numerous teams have represented the University at top-grade Moot Court Competitions, bringing laurels to the University. The University also hosts three moots on an annual basis, in addition to the Intra College Moots. It hosts the Surana and Surana National Trial Advocacy Moot Court Competition – South Rounds in association with Surana and Surana International Attorneys, Chennai. The second such moot is the prestigious NUALS National Moot Court Competition on Maritime Law.
Seminar Hall
NUALS is proud to have within its campus, the Seminar Hall which has hosted and seated many eminent individuals for inauguration ceremonies and seminars of the many Centres of Law in NUALS. The Seminar Hall is air-conditioned, well-furnished, and also equipped with a Bose sound system.
Research Centres
There are 16 Academic Centres in NUALS sponsored by the Government of Kerala engaged in research and training in their respective fields of study.
The subjects they deal with range from Human Rights to Intellectual Property Rights and Sports Law and Policy to Women and Family Studies. Each of these conducts in-depth research, regularly organizes National and International Seminars, and also assists the State and Central Governments in policy formation. All Centres are very active with a wide network of assisting lawyers and collaboration with eminent personalities.
Wi-Fi Facility
The Wi-Fi facility is available to all students upon receiving their roll numbers and passwords to access the NUALS network. It is an optic-fiber connection and high-speed networking. The entire campus is Wi-Fi connected.
